The Man Behind the Cave

Forty years.
One standard.

I'm the owner. I've been buying, selling, and collecting pocket knives out of a small shop on Main Street in Ironwood, Montana since 1984. What started as a hobby in my dad's hardware store turned into a life.

The owner in the shop

First knife I traded for was a Case XX peanut, 1965 dot stamp, bone handle, snapped like a mousetrap. I was twelve years old, gave a kid in my class three baseball cards and a half-empty bag of Mars bars. Still have it. Sits on my workbench in a little glass case where I can see it while I'm cataloging new pieces.

For forty years I've been doing this the same way. Open every knife. Check every blade. Feel the walk-and-talk. Describe it honest — no hiding a hairline or a tightened pin behind a fancy photograph. If a knife has been sharpened, I'll tell you. If a shield is loose, I'll tell you. If it's mint in the tube, that's what you'll get.

The shop is small. The cases are full. Most of what's in there came from estates and old collectors around eastern the region — pieces that were carried, loved, and put away carefully. That's the kind of knife I like to find, and that's the kind I like to sell.

I built this website so collectors who can't make it to Ironwood can still get a fair shake. Same knives, same descriptions, same handshake.
